Master Eolan

Master Eolan

Class: Male, Human, Mage, Scholar

Several moments pass before you hear steps approaching from behind the gate.

Then, a white-haired man opens the peephole.

“What do you want?”

“Jandora gave us your address.”

“I am sorry, but you’ve come to the wrong house!”

Before you have a chance to reply, the peephole is shut.

“We want to sweep the yard.”

“Well, okay, I guess it couldn’t hurt, but I’m not paying more than a crown to each of you!”

The peephole is closed, and you hear the gate unlock and the bolt draw back. Then, the white-haired man lets you in.

After locking the gate again securely after you, the white-haired fellow turns to you:

“Well then, I am Master Eolan. Now, what do you really want from me?”

“We are looking for a secret exit.”

“I might be able to help you in this regard, but first you would have to do me a small favor. However, you are too few for that task - return here after you have found some companions!”

“We’re supposed to sweep the yard, right?”

The old man takes some brooms from a small room and smiles at you:

“There you are then. Let me know when you’re done.”

You sweep the interior courtyard of the castle. Two hours later, you have completed your assignment and report to Master Eolan.

“Very good. Can I assist you in any other way?”

“No.”

“Here’s the promised silver crown for each of you.”

“Yes, we are looking for a secret exit.”

Friendly, but firm, Master Eolan accompanies you back to the castle gate.

“I might be able to help you in that matter, but first you have to do me a small favor.”

“What about the payment for our work?”

[Name] interrupts before Master Eolan can continue. Confused, Master Eolan looks at [Name], and gives a single silver to each of you.

It takes a few moments until he’s composed himself again.

“Two of you will remain here while the others can leave town to look for a missing friend of ours. Once you have brought this person back here, you will all be free to go.”

“We cannot accept those conditions.”

“Your situation does not allow you to make any demands - either we close the deal on my terms or you will all be held here!”

“All right then...”
“Never!”

The white-haired man puts two fingers between his lips. A loud whistle echoes through the building. Within seconds, you are completely surrounded and forced to surrender.

“This is your last chance to change your mind.”

“Take them to the dungeons. We will decide what to do with them later.”

You are brought to the dungeons by dozens of armed guards. Once there, you are herded into a spartan cell.

“Sounds all right to me - that’s the way. We’ll do it!”

“The man we are looking for is called Agdan Dragenfeld, but he is on his way to Svellmia under a false name. He is a week behind schedule. Agdan was planning to cross the swamps because anything else would have amounted to a detour. Also, he wasn’t too keen on being captured by the Orcs on the Thasch plains.”

“As he is on a secret mission, I cannot tell you much more than this. Anyway, you will recognize Agdan by his ring - it is a family heirloom and bears the Dragenfeld family crest of a dragon’s head.”

“That is all there is to say about it. Now, choose two from your number who will stay here in our care. As soon as the others return here with Agdan, you will all be allowed to leave Lowangen.”

Do you want to redistribute your equipment first?

Who will you leave behind? Who else will you leave behind? While Master Eolan was talking, a few others joined you and now take care of [Name1] and [Name2]. The rest of you are led by Master Eolan into the dungeons, an intricate labyrinth of corridors.

You finally reach a small room with two guards sitting around and looking thoroughly bored. Master Eolan gives [Name] a strangely shaped key, and then he opens a cupboard. A low tunnel is visible behind it. Accompanied by three guards, Master Eolan is already waiting for you. When you enter the room, he turns to [Name]:

“Well, you are back. What about Agdan?”

“We changed our minds and didn’t even look for him.”

“What kind of a feeble cop-out is that supposed to be? We had a deal, remember? Now get out there and do your part!”

“Agdan is dead.”

“That is terrible! How could that happen?”

You tell what happened. You spin a tall tale. The white-haired man says nothing for a while. Then, he turns again to [Name]:

“I guess you did what you could, so I will honor my promise.”

Your two friends are brought down, and after a moment of hesitating Master Eolan says:

“Keep the key, there is more than one of them.”

“We haven’t been able to find him.”

“Lies!”

Master Eolan cries and turns to the guardsmen:

“Take those lying idiots and lock them up. And you can go get those two others as well.”

Do you flee to the ruins? or surrender? I guess you won’t be seeing your two friends again! The guards seize you and take you into a spartan cell. Minutes later, the two others from your party are thrown in with you. Master Eolan is already there waiting for you. He is accompanied by three guards. When you enter, he stares in horror at Agdan’s body.

Master Eolan is already there waiting for you. He is accompanied by three guards. When you enter, he throws his arms around Agdan. After the two friends have enthusiastically greeted one another, Master Eolan turns back toward you.

“I’m forever in your debt!”

The guards fetch your two companions, and you welcome each other heartily.

“From now on, the way to the ruins shall always be open for you,” Eolan says.

“Keep the key, there is more than one of them.”

Do you finally leave Lowangen? or would you rather take another look around town first?

Within seconds, you are completely surrounded by guards. Soon after, you are back before Master Eolan.

“You actually dared come back here?!” he asks in a mixture of astonishment and satisfaction of having you in his power.

“Take them to the dungeons. We will decide what to do with them later.”

Did you really think you could simply waltz back in here again? We have left Lowangen. Of course, now we have to enter the swamps to search for that Dragenfeld character. But, we can use him to buy the release of our companions. We couldn’t return Dragenfeld to Lowangen alive. Nevertheless we did get our hostages back, and were even allowed to keep the key to Lowangen. We can leave Lowangen, but at a steep price. We had to leave [Name1] and [Name2] behind as hostages. Also, we were given a mission to go find one Agdan Dragenfeld somewhere in the Svellt Swamps - if he actually is there, and that’s a mighty big if!

Master Eolan has released [Name1] and [Name2]. Finally, we are united again! We have accomplished our assignment and returned Agdan Dragenfeld to the castle safe and sound. Now, the way into and out of Lowangen is open to us whenever we need it, and we can finally take care of our problems.
