You have to knock a number of times before you notice a reaction. A small, barred peephole in the gate opens. An older man looks you over for quite a while, then he finally addresses you:
“What do you want?”
“Nothing, we knocked on the wrong door by mistake!”
“Then stop bothering me, I’m busy!”
Before you have a chance to reply, he shuts the peephole.
“We are looking for lodging.”
“You’re wrong here - this isn’t an inn! Now stop bothering me, I’m busy!”

“Just a moment!”
The man closes the peephole. You hear footsteps from behind the gate. After that, nothing at all happens.
